On 19 April 2018, Amazon posted an introduction to its new web service templates for Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric.

A partnership with the R3 DLT consortium last December saw the launch of the Corda platform on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Corda was the first blockchain development platform to support building distributed applications on AWS.

Under Amazon’s cloud computing division, the new templates hope to assist in the creation of projects by offering a framework of blockchain technology for developers. Companies will be able to avoid manually setting up their blockchain network, saving money and time.

Amazon will include AWS Blockchain Templates with no additional fees. The expectation will be to pay for the resources related to your blockchain network.

Amazon to bring a wider adoption of blockchain

In previous years, AWS disclosed they had in excess of a million customers every month from 190 countries and was inclusive of around 2,000 government agencies, 5,000 education institutions, and over 17,500 non-profit organizations.

Amazon hosts services for several large companies such as Netflix, Adobe Systems, Airbnb, BMW, Met Office and many more. Access to blockchain developer tools could make the transition to decentralized apps easier with the confidence that Amazon is hosting and supporting them.

Other cloud service providers supporting blockchain

Cloud computing is a rapidly growing market with a projected expansion from USD 67 billion in 2015 to USD 162 billion by 2020. Microsoft commercial cloud is the largest vendor, with an annual revenue run rate of USD 21.2 billion, followed closely by AWS at USD 20.4 billion.

Others like IBM, Oracle, Google Cloud Platform and Alibaba are also posting billions of dollars in revenue run rate.

Research firm Gartner found that 74% of tech chief financial Officers (CFOs) believed that cloud computing would have the most measurable impact on business last year. This year is set to see at least 50% of total IT spending allocated to cloud-based services, accounting for 60% of all IT infrastructure.

Several other large companies in the cloud service business such as Microsoft, IBM and Google are continuing to develop blockchain solutions.

Microsoft Azure already offers blockchain development solutions while IBM and Google continue to develop their platforms.

Blockchain technology goes hand in hand with artificial intelligence (AI). AI such as Alexa (Amazon) and Cortana (Microsoft) and blockchain could pave the future for more sophisticated cloud-based services. Google Cloud Platform also believes machine learning will contribute to future growth of services.
