Robots will undoubtedly take many of our jobs. Some sectors will be hit harder than others. The food industry is prone to major disruption. Robot Pizza Makers Have Arrived in Silicon Valley

New technologies are changing and improving the food industry. Not too long ago, we saw the BurgerBot make its mark on the industry. Its implications on displacing human workers have yet to be seen. However, there is a certain aspect of preparing food that warrants a human touch. Robots are currently incapable of creating that uniqueness which humans can provide.

The new robot pizza makers are trying to do things a bit differently that the BurgerBot. They learn how to make better pizza pies through to trial and error. The robotic pizza maker uses machine learning to help it create better pizzas in the future. It is an interesting concept when it comes to mass-producing pizzas, but they will not put artisan pizza makers out of business anytime soon.

The robots beat human pizza makers in a very important area: productivity. They can make more pizzas faster than a human could ever dream to make. It is expected the robot pizza maker will prepare and cook up to ten times as many pizzas compared to a pizzeria with a similar-sized staff. It can do this through clever division of labor. One part of the robot puts tomato sauce onto its pies and another part spreads the sauce. There is even a separate arm to put pies in the oven. A robot to form the dough into a circle will be introduced very soon as well.

Initial investment for the robot will be a costly venture. The robots themselves are not cheap by any means. However, the BurgerBot is not cheap either, yet saves businesses twice its original cost over the course of one year. The profits made by replacing staff with robot pizza makers has yet to be determined. We can assume that investment capital would be easily recovered and profits would compound.

There is still a big difference between a human touch and mimicking the movements of human workers. Robots are rather adept at learning through imitation, but that does not necessarily yield comparable results in quality. Plus, humans can create unique flavors when it comes to pizzas, whereas robots will produce “generic” pizzas by repeating the same processes until it is instructed to stop. That does not mean the pizzas will taste bad, but variety is the spice of life.

It looks like these robot pizza makers are designed to complement human staff rather than replace it. This sounds like the best way to go, for now. Despite the production boost robots can provide, there is always a need for human oversight. One day robots may take replace low-level workers in many industries, including food preparation. For now, however, that does not appear to be the primary objective.

Russian Military Personnel Become Super Soldiers Thanks to Futuristic Exoskeleton

The New Russian Exoskeleton Looks Intimidating

Most people around the world consider the Russian armed forces as fiercely competent and brave. No one knows for sure how well the Russian army matches up with any other world power. Other nations are not only impressed by the caliber of solider Russia has, but also their technology and for good reason. Recently, engineers have put together a new exoskeleton to make its military look even more intimidating. This futuristic-looking suit comes straight out of a movie or TV show, but its implications are very real.

The combat exoskeleton looks quite cool. It is something that will likely inspire new stories and ideas. The exoskeleton was developed by the Russian Central Research Institute for Precision Machine Building. That is quite a mouthful for a governmental organization, but do not let that fool you, this organization produces some incredible innovations.

The powered exoskeleton is designed to serve as combat armor, but it can also perform other taks. First and foremost, it provides some ballistic protection from shrapnel and bullets. There is also a heads-up display, which is built into the helmet. It is unclear if this will be a digital overlay within the helmet display, but we will find out more in the coming years. It is not even ready for production yet, but the prototypes are intriguing.

The institution is revamping the way we think about army infantry units. Modern warfare is advancing at an accelerated pace, and new technologies often end up on the battlefield. A powered exoskeleton will certainly introduce some new capabilities to the average solider and challenges for those he encounters.

An exoskeleton provides is a way for soldiers to deal with less fatigue. Lugging around weapons and gear will become less an issue when the exoskeleton bears most of the weight. As is usually the case, Russia is not the only country working on this type of technology. The United States military is looking to develop a very similar program. Russia and the US have been involved in an arms and technology race since the end of the Second World War.

Unfortunately, it does not appear we will see these types of exoskeletons used by superheroes anytime soon. The military often gets all of the fun gadgets first and foremost, and the rest of the world will have to wait their turn. We may have to wait a bit longer before getting personal versions of these. It is an intriguing and incredibly cool development.

Ross Ulbricht, the alleged `Dread Pirate Roberts´, was suddenly transferred to another location on Thursday. The move happened without warning or notice. Family members went to pay him a visit, and they discovered he was no longer at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York.

Soon after the family realized what happened, they tweeted Ross was no longer there. It took until the next day before they realized he was being transferred to another correctional unit. Ross finally called and let them know he was being moved. The tweet read: “Ross called. So happy to hear from him. He’s at OK City Fed’l Transfer Ctr being designated to a prison. He’s in good spirits.”

A followup tweet illustrated the family’s concern for Ross, suggesting that he could be moved to a more violent or dangerous prison.

A Brief History of Ross Ulbricht and the Silk Road

For anyone who is unfamiliar with the case — and why it is important for many in the bitcoin community — Ross was arrested in San Francisco on October 1, 2013, for allegedly running the online darknet marketplace called Silk Road. He was accused of being the Dread Pirate Roberts, the individual/individuals who created and managed the business.

Potential customers accessed the page via a TOR browser and purchased everything from drugs to raw milk, and jewelry. Most transactions took place using bitcoin. However, certain transactions were disallowed. These off-limit items included child pornography, assassination markets, and solicitation of stolen goods.

Ross Ulbricht

Freeross.org read, “The Silk Road website was an open market with few restrictions and permitted vendors to sell drugs and other illegal goods as well as legal ones, including art, books, raw milk and clothing. It forbade items that the administration considered victimizing, including child pornography, stolen goods and assassinations. Nothing but drug sales was allowed to be mentioned before the jury.”

After the arrest and subsequent trial, Ross was convicted for running the website, even though the case was complex and involved corruption from Federal Agents. Ross was handed two life sentences. The charges were all drug-related. He was not convicted for committing a violent crime, though. There was also suspicion he may have not been the acting “Dread Pirate Roberts.”

Do you believe what happened to Ross was wrong? Will he eventually be pardoned and released from prison? Let us know in the comments below.
