10 Songs That Show Bitcoin’s Influence on Pop Culture

Eminem surprised rap fans this week by dropping his new album ‘Kamikaze’. For cryptocurrency enthusiasts there was an extra point of interest in the new album, since one of the tracks, “Not Alike”, namechecks Bitcoin. If awareness is the first step in driving adoption then Bitcoin can do a lot worse than a shout out on the real Slim Shady’s latest opus. He’s by no means the first artist to reference Bitcoin though as the following playlist shows.

Pop Stars and Cryptocurrency Make Strange Bedfellows

Kim Kardashian Receives Her First Bitcoin
Kim Kardashian

Pop stars and cryptocurrency have had a mixed relationship. While A-listers like Kanye, Kim Kardashian, and Katy Perry have all made mention of Bitcoin, others have dabbled with more dubious cryptos; think of the DJ Khaled-backed Centra, whose founders faced the full force of the SEC. Meanwhile, Akon plans to build a whole city in Senegal which only accepts his own crypto – Akoin. While the business acumen of popular musicians is often dubious, popular culture is a great driver of awareness. The following tracks all mention cryptocurrency, some overtly and others in passing. They provide a snapshot of pop culture and demonstrate the strides that Bitcoin has made in infiltrating mainstream society.

Eminem – Not Alike

Following the poor reception of his last LP, “Revival”, Eminem is back, mad as hell and at his lyrical best. The reference to bitcoin in “Not Alike” is clear but metaphorical, especially when you consider that track collaborator Royce Da 59, who drops the line, is often referred to as Nickel Nine.

‘Member everybody used to bite Nickel

Now everybody doin’ bitcoin

Remy – Bitcoin Billionaire

Possibly one of the funniest songs ever released about cryptocurrency, “Bitcoin Billionaire” by Reason TV sums it all up with the immortal lines:

A money like my last girl

Completely virtual

In the end Remy’s billionaire ends up broke after a solar flare kills his bitcoin savings. It’s happened to us all.

Coindaddy – Alt Season

Unlike many of the artists on this list, Coindaddy (aka Arya Bahmanyar) actually makes a regular living from cryptocurrency. Coindaddy is therefore the real deal when it comes to cryptocurrency. When it comes to music however, that status is more debatable.

Imma go and short some bitcoin

Every day and every night

Cos it’s a bearish market

And there ain’t nothin in sight

Ytcracker – Bitcoin Baron

Ytracker brings us the most electronic track on this list with some free-flowing rhymes and a great beat. This one is a tune.

I’m a bitcoin baron, I’m scaring the status quo

Got that crypto dough in that dat file to blow

And the algorithm gon’ get em until prism

Send us all to prison and that’s a nerdy living

The Bitcoin Dip – We Miss You

The Bitcoin Dip’s “We Miss You” is a cover of Puff Daddy’s “I’ll Be Missing You” which is a cover of The Police’s “I’ll Be Watching You”. Got that? It’s a musical number which has been forked almost as many times as bitcoin itself.

Lil Windex – Bitcoin Ca$h

Possibly the most popular rapper named after a cleaning product, Lil Windex is a Canadian wordsmith particularly infatuated with Bitcoin Cash.

Cryptocurrency Girls – The Moon and Cryptocurrency and Me

Trust Japan to take things one step beyond. The Cryptocurrency Girls are an 8-strong girl group where each member takes on the persona of a particular cryptocurrency. It’s very Japanese.

Laura Saggers – 10,000 Bitcoins

A Bitcoin song that wants to be Regina Spektor but sounds more like Chas n’ Dave, “10,00 Bitcoins” by Laura Saggers isn’t the strongest of efforts, but earns inclusion as an antidote to all the testosterone-charged tracks on this playlist.

Mayday & Murs – Bitcoin Beezy

“I got 50 bitcoin worth about a hundred grand,” sings Mayday & Murs. If they had the presence of mind to hodl, those 50 BTC are now worth a cool $360,000.

Ricegum – Bitcoin

Youtube star Ricegum has also thrown his hat into the Bitcoin ring. You may not have heard of Ricegum, but the star has over 10 million subscribers, so he’s doing something right. The less said about the song the better.

On this evidence, Bitcoin songs are unlikely to be topping the charts anytime soon. Still, fans of the cryptocurrency can take solace from the fact that on the only chart that matters – the Top 100 by Market Cap – Bitcoin’s been number one for nine years straight.

What other songs can you think of that reference Bitcoin? Let us know in the comments section below.

Judging from the way candlesticks are arranged, altcoins appear to be bottoming gaining on average six percent in the last week. Propelling this recovery is the revival of Bitcoin prices which is up nine percent in the last week and on chain developments that drew demand in Tron and IOTA. Stellar Lumens on the other hand is shaky oscillating inside a descending wedge with 25 cents capping gains.

Let’s have a look at these charts:

EOS Price Analysis

From the News

  • Dan Larimer’s dApp and smart contracting platform continues to outperform. Recently, during the Blockchain World conference at San Jose, California, the platform was declared the best blockchain platform of the year. This comes only weeks after Chinese CCID named it the best blockchain platform of the month for the fourth consecutive month.

Technical Analysis

Though there was a slight dip in momentum visible from yesterday’s price action, EOS bulls continue to dominate adding 33 percent in the last week alone.

While risk-on traders can pick up longs on dips in lower time frame as they sync with the general bull pressure, we recommend patience until after there is a conclusive close above $7, our immediate resistance line in line with our last EOS trade plan.

Stops should be at Aug 17 highs at $5.5 with first targets at $9, the upper limit of our last trade range.

Litecoin (LTC) Price Analysis

A 17 percent gain in the last week means LTC is higher cementing our bullish stance. What’s important though is the way price action is set up and a stand out in that case is Sep 1 bullish candlestick a technical confirmation of Aug 17 bullish candlestick and a trigger of our long expectations.

While our short term longs with previous stops at $55 and targets at $70 are active, conservative traders should wait until after there are clear developments on whether recent higher highs are a retest of $70 or a new wave of bulls reversing the last eight month bear pressure.

The latter is true especially if this week end bullish closing above $80 or $90 on the upside.

Stellar Lumens (XLM) Price Analysis

After spear heading altcoin reversal in early Aug, Stellar Lumens is shaky to say the least. Currently, prices are still trading within a descending wedge with supports at around 20 cents—our monthly support trend line and 25 cents on the upside capping gains.

Given the recovery in the altcoin markets and most importantly BTC, it likely that there is an undervaluation in the XLM and that’s why we suggest buying once there is a break above 25 cents with targets at 30 cents and later 50 cents.

Canceling this hawkish projection is any move that will breach the monthly support trend line driving prices towards 20 cents and 18 cents in line with our previous XLM analysis.

Tron (TRX) Price Analysis

From the News

  • In a bid to trigger community participation, the Tron Foundation has announced a new initiative rewarding users for voting for their Super Representatives.

Technical Analysis

Technically, odds are TRX might surge in the course of the week. In the weekly chart, there is a nice three bar reversal pattern, the Morning Star and though last five days price action have been ranging, any breach above week ending Aug 12 highs at 3 cents shall be pointers of a bottoming market and a shift of increasing bull momentum. Thanks to last week’s events, we recommend longs with stops at Aug 27 lows at 2.2 cents and first targets at 3 cents and later 4 cents.

IOTA (IOT) Price Analysis

From the News

  • Set for launch in 2019, IOTA and Volkswagen are working on a new product, the Digital CarPass. The product will leverage on IOTA’s blockchain for data storage for security and reliability purposes.

Technical Analysis

Like TRX, IOTA is slowing down but prices are still moving within Aug 27 high low inside a descending triangle meaning our last IOTA trade plan is active. Since the overall momentum is bullish, we suggest taking longs in lower time frames with stops at 60 cents—Aug 17 highs and first targets at 90 cents and later $1.3.

The local government in the South Korean province of Gyeongsangbuk-do has plans to issue its own digital currency to replace a state loyalty scheme.

Gyeongsangbuk-do officials will reportedly partner with the blockchain startup Orbs, to develop and issue ‘Gyeongbuk Coin’ to replace the current ‘Hometown Love Gift Card’ being used by residents. Gyeongbuk Coin will be backed by blockchain technology, although local media reports do not indicate if the state plans to develop its own or use one already developed.

The scheme plans to issue KRW 100 billion worth each year, the same total as that issued in the loyalty scheme. Coins will be bought on an exchange using the South Korean won, and can then be spent at participating businesses using smartphone QR codes.

Chung Sung-Hyun, head of the science and technology policy department in Gyeongsangbuk-do said the main issues still to be addressed include informing merchants on how the digital coins can be used and how the process works, as well as creating separate programs and issuing the coins. On the subject of cryptocurrencies, he described them as a ”core technology to be accepted.”

A forward-thinking country

South Korea is recognized as having some of the most progressive, forward-thinking attitudes towards blockchain globally.

Most recently, the country announced it would host a blockchain awareness hackathon as part of the 2018 Blockchain Promotion Week. Scheduled to take place from 26 to 30 November, the hackathon aims to boost public awareness of blockchain itself and show society and industries its true potential.

A blockchain reality television show is planned to hit the screens in South Korea this October, titled ”Blockbattle: Who’s the next Satoshi?” Five episodes are scheduled to air, following blockchain-experienced applicants and a range of international experts from technology, business, law, marketing, and finance to assist them through the various challenges.

In a move to help improve security in the crypto-sphere, Firefox has announced that all future versions of its web browser will automatically block crypto-jacking malware.

Cryptomining scripts that mine cryptocurrencies unknown to the owner of the device will be prevented from autorunning. While it may be a relatively small number of people that experience this themselves, a growing number of incidents have been reported this year. Firefox is providing a secure solution against this, which will help rid the cryptocurrency industry of the arguably undeserved stigma it has received due to negative media reports of incidents such as crypto-jacking.

The decision was made as part of Firefox’s anti-tracking initiative that goes live in the following few months. The aim is to target the negative impacts of unchecked online tracking. Future web browsers will protect users by default from this, and offer users more advanced controls over what information of theirs is shared with third parties.

In addition to blocking crypto-jacking malware, the initiative plans to prevent noticeable effects such as what it describes as ”eerily-specific targeted advertising”, as well as those that users are unable to spot such as unchecked data collection that can lead to major security breaches. Firefox cited a study that indicates a total of 55.4% of time spent loading a web page is actually spent sending information to third parties.

Opera also offers this service

The popular web browser Opera added a similar anti-crypto-jacking function to its desktop adblocker update in December last year, adding that in January it plans to include this feature in its mobile application also.

Opera has become an increasingly popular web browser of choice as earlier this month it announced plans to integrate a cryptocurrency wallet into its desktop web browser supporting a wide variety of tokens. Charles Hamel, Product Lead of Opera describes the integration as a key step in “making cryptocurrencies and Web 3.0. mainstream.”

At press time, the largest cryptocurrency by market cap remains at $7,200, where it has been for nearly 72 hours. However, the price has bumped itself up just enough that $7,300 is likely right around the corner granted bitcoin can keep up this momentum.

According to one analyst, bitcoin is exhibiting great maturity, and it’s the recent rejections of bitcoin ETFs by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that have compelled it to spike into the $7,000 range. Michael Moro – CEO of Genesis Trading and Genesis Capital – mentions that bitcoin didn’t react much to the SEC’s recent rejection of roughly nine individual ETFs and was able to hold its ground and prepare itself for an upcoming spike.

BTCUSD: BTC - DOES DIRECTION MATTER?

He further states that if bitcoin can hold its present position for a minimum of one to two weeks, we’re likely to see the bulls return in full form, and $10,000 would be the next probably target for bitcoin.

He comments:

“What you need to see is the less violent moves of five percent up, ten percent up, and a slow and steady growth across the exchanges. What I also think is important is I think the market now understands that the SEC’s ETF approval isn’t any time soon. I think the bears have realized that they’ve run out of steam. It’s folks who have managed to scoop up the dip and are selling at the next pop. The question is, are the bulls here to stay?”

Financial reporter Bob Pisani has also mentioned that bitcoin futures volumes have doubled in recent weeks, largely thanks to institutional activity. He says:

“What’s important here is that the increase in futures volume on CME has occurred while bitcoin went from $6,000 in June to over $8,000 in July, and then all the way back down to about $6,000. It means that at least some traders are perfectly willing to trade bitcoin for futures on the way up and on the way down. It seems like a more active market out there.”

What is clear is that the bitcoin price has ultimately bottomed out, and while it’s hard to say if the currency had reached its lowest point in recent weeks, the bulls do appear to be in greater – if not full – swing. It’s important for the currency to keep up its present steam if the bulls are going to make a full comeback and control the financial reins as they briefly did in July.

The $7,250 mark has been retested with bitcoin’s latest price, but a fall back into the $6,000 range could spell certain doom for bitcoin and its legions of investors.

The post Russian Police Swoop on 22 Crypto ATM’s Across the Country appeared first on BitcoinNews.com.

The Russian Police have seized 22 Bitcoin ATMs in 9 different cities across the country by orders from the country’s Central Bank.

The machines located mostly in shopping malls, stores and restaurants across the country are operated by Bbfpro. The company’s manager said there were no warnings from the police prior to the seizures, but that the authorities said that the machines will form part of an ongoing police investigation set to last for at least six months.

Cryptocurrencies are still not legally accepted in the vast country, although President Putin has flirted with the idea in the past of looking into the possibility of a state-owned crypto, principally to avoid trading sanctions. A statement on a government website in November last year, released when Bitcoin was skyrocketing, outlined the government’s position at that time when a local businessman attempted to install two ATM’s in Kazan:

“Currently, the legal status of crypto-currency in the Russian Federation is not defined. The provision by Russian legal entities of services for exchanging “virtual currencies” for rubles and foreign currency, as well as for goods (work, services) is considered as potential involvement in the implementation of questionable transactions in accordance with the legislation on combating the legalization (laundering) of proceeds from crime, and the financing of terrorism.”

This hasn’t stopped the Russians from continuing the installations of Bitcoin ATMs, with 43 operating in the country until the police swooped in this week. In terms of world rankings, the US has the most number of installed Crypto ATMs, with 1721 machines currently in use, out of which 151 are located in New York City. Europe is led by Austria with 160 machines currently in use, followed by the UK with 124. The latest machine was installed in the UK, in the sleepy town of Kingsbridge, Devon just last week. France only has 2 active Bitcoin ATMs.

Although the Russsian Central Bank has not given any detail on why it ordered the seizures of Bbfpro’s ATMs, an official has indicated that the regulator carries out “systematic work to identify and counteract illegal activities in the financial market,” meanwhile, no indication of illegal activity has been reported.

Bbfpro has sought legal representation to fight against the seizures, claiming that Russia does not actually prohibit the acquisition of cryptocurrency and that the company itself follows all legal requirements by payment of government taxes and verification of user identities.
